For those interested in languages on my friends list, of which I know there are more than a few. Here's a website I heard about while at ALA:
Ethnologue. It lists where languages are, how many speakers there are, what family that language falls in, etc. Along with some nice maps. All freely available on line.

Linguist friend sent that my way and it is interesting... Except for the fundamental principles of historical linguistic study are flawed. I maintain, in the face of violent opposition from everyone else, that English should be classified by itself or as a Latinate owing to that pesky 1066 thing and the persistance of Welsh which has heavy Latin influence. Oh no. English is Germanic because that is where it starts it's life. Well, by that theroy birds are lizards.

Join me comrade, together ve vill carry de Revolution to de new level. But you're right. It's damned slick, free and (weeps) terribly useful.

I'm hoping too, I'm usually the one left inthe office (hence why I missed San Antonio) but I'm fighting tooth and nail to get to go. I didn't get to go on our trip to Singapore though *pout*.
